In 2009, the film Ocean Heaven, directed by Xue Xiaolu and starring Jet Li and Wen Zhang, gently placed a group seldom brought to the screen into the hearts of audiences — they are people with autism, and we are accustomed to calling them "children of the stars."

Wang Xincheng (played by Jet Li) is an ordinary electrician at an aquarium. His wife passed away early, and he and his autistic son, Dafu, depend on each other to get by. Dafu is twenty-one, yet still like a child: he cannot speak, does not understand danger, and cannot be parted from his father for even a moment. Fate gave this father and son no time to catch their breath — Wang Xincheng was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer, with only a few months left to live.

What he fears most is not death, but what will become of Dafu after he is gone. The most heart-wrenching scene in the film is when Wang Xincheng tries to take Dafu with him in death, then stops at the very last moment — he cannot let his son bear death in his place. And so, he turned his remaining days into a "farewell training": teaching Dafu again and again to boil an egg, ride the bus, recognize the way home, and fold his clothes neatly. The father, like a clumsy sea turtle, dons a heavy turtle shell and swims into the aquarium pool, merely to make his water-fearing son believe that Daddy will turn into a big turtle and stay with him forever.

What moves most in this film has never been the suffering, but the tenderness that grows from within it. Dafu cannot remember many things, yet he remembers his father's face; he cannot express love, yet when his father falls, he clumsily leans his head against him. That bond of kinship is quiet, slow, and awkward, yet deeper than any words. Wang Xincheng spent his remaining life only to fight for his son a sliver of the possibility to "keep on living" — perhaps the deepest tie in this world is this: even after I am gone, I will still pave the next stretch of the road for you.

What Ocean Heaven truly wants to say goes beyond fatherly love. It lays bare before us the real lives of people with autism: they are not unreachable "geniuses," but ordinary people who need to be cared for, understood, and accepted. In China, tens of millions of families are living through similar dawns and nights. Can we have a little more patience — on the subway, on the street corner, in the classroom — and give that "different" person a bit of space? Can we have fewer strange looks and more of the warmth of an outstretched hand? To care about autism is not merely to care about a condition, but to care about the emotional right of every individual to be seen and to be needed.

The tide will eventually recede, but love need not. Wang Xincheng could not accompany Dafu to the very end, yet what he left behind is an egg his son can boil on his own, and a fairy tale that says "Daddy turns into a turtle." May every "child of the stars" find, in this mortal world, their own piece of Ocean Heaven.
