In July this year, the State Council Working Committee on Disability issued the *15th Five-Year Plan for the Protection and Development of Persons with Disabilities*, which for the first time lists autism as a separate key project, adding an exclusive column for the "Autism Full Life-Cycle Care Promotion Action." This completely breaks the previous shortcoming of "focusing only on early-childhood rehabilitation while neglecting support throughout the whole course of growth," and builds a full-chain protection system covering early screening and diagnosis, rehabilitation and improvement, inclusive education, employment for older youth, lifelong residential care and family support. But employment for the autism community is by no means easy. Jiang Yingshuang, founder of Dami and Xiaomi, said that employment is a right everyone should have, and that people with special needs such as autism enjoy the right to employment just the same. "As early as seven years ago, Dami and Xiaomi was among the first to recruit autistic young employees nationwide. We found that when you adjust the way you interact with them and the demands you place on them according to their distinctive characteristics, in such an environment their impairments can actually disappear, or come to be regarded as an ideal steady state — and this is exactly the outcome every parent dreams of," Jiang Yingshuang said. This is equivalent, she explained, to giving autistic youth a "crutch" — support that lets them walk — while Dami and Xiaomi's aim is simply to let them walk, not to care whether they lean on a crutch. That way they can achieve employment just like anyone else, which is a right everyone should have. At present, Dami and Xiaomi has nearly 20 full-time autistic young employees, distributed across its centers nationwide, as well as nearly 100 employee-parents of autistic children. In addition, it has signed contracts with young autistic painters, selling their paintings through a charity gallery and producing co-branded merchandise, turning their labor into real income. But the strength of a single company is, after all, limited. Out of this came Dami and Xiaomi's "Heart Order" program. In July this year, Dami and Xiaomi took the initiative to connect with two employment organizations for youth with special needs — Yixingniang of Wenzhou and Heart Sets Sail of Fujian — using corporate Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes as the first rollout of the "Heart Order" program. "A real order, in the most pragmatic way, answers the most urgent appeal. It is not a donation, not goods and materials, but the market's confirmation of the value of these young people's labor," said Pan Caifu, chief brand officer of Dami and Xiaomi. Going forward, he said, the hope is to find more employment organizations for youth with special needs for co-branding and cooperation, and to find more corporate partners willing to join in public-interest co-branding. At the same time, Dami and Xiaomi will build and open up a resource library for special-needs employment, recording and sharing the story behind every order. Some 10,028 mooncakes and more than 3,000 pendants have already been shipped to destinations across the country. For the "Heart Youth," this is only one of the many orders they have completed. For Hu Wenzhong and Zhang Xiuli, it is another footprint along their "heart's journey." And for the "Heart Order" program, it is only a beginning. |
