认知障碍老人:“你的房间是茄子,我的房间是菠萝,再也不会混了!”/Elderly with Cognitive Impairment: "Your room is the eggplant, mine is the pineapple — we'll never mix them up again!" On the morning of October 12, on the eve of the Double Ninth Festival, the Development Zone Nursing Home was especially lively. Accompanied by volunteers, the elderly played games and made food, experiencing the joy of the holiday through hands-on activity and mental engagement. For the residents living with cognitive impairment, these seemingly simple activities carried a special meaning. Xu Dami, 84, lives with cognitive impairment. Accompanied by volunteers, she joined the other elderly in the fun activities. The rules of the games were not complicated and required no great exertion, yet they gave the elderly a chance to move their hands and feet and to talk with others. Besides the games, the elderly also sat together to try their hand at making food. Behind the lively Double Ninth festivities lies the nursing home's sustained attention to the care needs of elderly residents with cognitive impairment. "At present our home has 112 elderly residents, about one third of whom live with cognitive impairment. Through this activity, family members and the elderly take part together and interact with one another, which also lifts their spirits," introduced Lu Weihong, director of the Development Zone Nursing Home. As population aging continues to deepen, the care needs of elderly people with cognitive impairment are drawing growing attention. How to ensure that these elderly not only receive care in daily life, but also have suitable activity spaces and professional care, has become a real question that elderly care services must answer. At the Development Zone Nursing Home, a renovation project to improve the care environment for elderly residents with cognitive impairment has been essentially completed. It is understood that this year the Development Zone launched a residential care renovation project, upgrading the interior and exterior walls, outdoor corridors and fire escape routes of some of the nursing home's buildings, and creating 15 rooms for elderly residents with cognitive impairment, adding 32 new care beds for cognitive impairment. On the morning of that day, this reporter's visit showed that the renovated nursing home had taken on a completely new look: in the newly established special care zone for cognitive impairment, supporting facilities such as an activity room, assisted bathing room and private bathrooms are all fully provided; every room is posted with pictures of vegetables, fruits and other things familiar to the elderly, making it easier for them to remember and recognize; and the corridors feature various cognitive training games, so that the elderly can undergo cognitive training while simply walking about, slowing the progression of the condition and enjoying their later years in a familiar, safe and dignified environment. For elderly people with cognitive impairment, however, a suitable living environment is only part of care — professional nursing is equally indispensable. Gu Lidan, director of the Development Zone Social Affairs Office, introduced that the newly added special care zone for cognitive impairment is scheduled to be officially opened next April, when it will admit elderly residents with cognitive impairment and provide them with professional care. Meanwhile, the nursing home has organized 12 caregivers to receive professional training in cognitive impairment care, further enhancing the professional competence of its nursing staff. From a single Double Ninth Festival activity to a purpose-designed special care zone for cognitive impairment, the Development Zone Nursing Home is exploring more meticulous elderly care services centered on daily activities, the living environment and professional care. |
