On October 9, at the 2026 Beijing Elderly Care Service Industry Development Si Ji Qing Forum, the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" was officially unveiled and established. Yang Zhiwei, member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, introduced that the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" is an integrated innovation service platform for the elderly care sector built under the leadership of the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, bringing together government, industry, academia, research, and application. It is not a laboratory in the traditional sense. The platform aims to integrate high-quality resources from across the city in elderly-related research, teaching, industry, and services, so as to solve practical problems such as insufficient professional support for elderly care services, shallow integration of science and technology, and poor matching between supply and demand, and to open up the full chain of "basic research—technology breakthroughs—achievement transformation—industrial application" in the elderly care field. It is understood that the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" will focus on achieving five major construction goals: building a comprehensive innovation platform that integrates technology development, theoretical research, standards formulation, scenario validation, industrial incubation, and talent cultivation; linking diverse actors such as government, universities, research institutes, medical institutions, enterprises, and financial institutions to build a collaborative innovation ecosystem; producing a batch of replicable and promotable technological, standards, and model achievements to support policy making and industrial upgrading; cultivating a multidisciplinary team of compound elderly care professionals; and closely tracking the inclusive implementation of scientific and technological elderly care achievements in home, community, and institutional elderly care scenarios to improve older adults' quality of life and sense of happiness. At present, the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" has gathered key laboratories at the national and provincial/ministerial levels, including the National Key Laboratory of Cognitive Science and Mental Health, the Key Laboratory of Age-Friendly Buildings and Environment of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Smart Elderly Care and Health Engineering; universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Renmin University of China; research institutes such as the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; top-tier medical institutions such as Beijing Geriatric Hospital; the China executive agency of the United Nations Institute for Ageing; as well as industry associations, financial institutions, and technology enterprises. It has also formed multiple specialized R&D and research teams. It is understood that the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" has already carried out research work on comprehensive theoretical research related to the elderly, the construction of smart elderly care scenarios, the standardization of elderly care, and the building of elderly care service talent. As a coordinating mechanism for market and social resources serving the elderly, the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" will be committed to enabling more research results and new products to be quickly applied on the ground, so that more older adults can benefit. This year, the "Beijing Lab for the Elderly" will carry out joint research on key topics in directions such as "elderly care + artificial intelligence," elderly-related data governance, dementia care, and silver-haired consumption; implement a batch of key demonstration projects such as human-machine symbiotic smart elderly care, inclusive smart nursing homes, and elderly-related data governance; and simultaneously advance the construction of two distinctive industrial carriers—the Chaoyang District Smart Health and Wellness Industrial Park and the Shougang Silver-Haired Economy Industrial Park—to build an industrial service platform, incubate innovative projects such as smart health and wellness and anti-aging, help cultivate the capital's silver-haired economy industrial cluster, and create a national benchmark for the development of scientific and technological innovation in elderly care services. |
