Special-needs children, patiently accompanied by their teachers, train their motor coordination through games; the children are brimming with enthusiasm, and laughter fills the entire classroom. Wan Hongjin, an 81-year-old resident of the Xinhua Tianyuan residential community, comes to the day-care center every day. She has many good friends here, with whom she practices fan dance and plays table tennis daily. "I come out every day to dance and play table tennis, and after I've exercised I have a meal in the canteen. Life feels leisurely yet full," she said. It is understood that the Yongle Community Day-Care Center for the Elderly officially opened in early March this year, with a floor area of 1,200 square meters. Since it began operating, it has won unanimous praise from the elderly and special-needs children in its service area. The center is equipped with a dining hall, a reading room, a calligraphy-and-painting room, an activity room, a chess-and-cards room, a yoga room for seniors, a dance studio, and a rehabilitation therapy room. It provides rehabilitation training for special-needs children in the area and offers the elderly services such as daily living care, meal supply, personal care, leisure and entertainment, and emotional support. Beyond free recreational activities — singing and instrumental performances, film screenings, calligraphy and painting — it also offers free blood pressure measurement, health consultation and assessment, and legal consultation. According to Yu Xihong, the center's director, the day-care center has recruited professional talent and set up a social work station, focusing on people in difficulty, special groups, and minors in order to meet individualized needs. The center is open to residents of the area and its surroundings every day from 9:30 to 19:30, giving residents a spacious and comfortable space for activities. "I really love coming here to play," said one special-needs child. This place is not only a recreation ground for the elderly, but also a playground for special-needs children. Here, professionals provide language training, cognitive training, sensory integration training, behavior modification, and psychological counseling for children with autism and developmental delays. Parent Zhao Shuiping said: "My child used to not speak. After coming here in March, he gradually began to talk. Seeing his progress makes me very happy. The teachers here are all so loving — five months of rehabilitation treatment has given me hope." More and more elderly people and special-needs children in Yongle Community are feeling, right at their doorstep, the convenience and happiness that the day-care center brings. Xin Zhilian, director of the day-care center, said: "Going forward, we will learn from more new models, give fuller play to the role of the day-care center, and create a better living environment for the elderly and special-needs children." |
