Co-hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Dongcheng District Committee, the Management Committee of the Two Bricks Public Welfare Foundation, and People's Literature Publishing House, the "Walking with the Stars — Exhibition of Manuscripts by One Hundred Chinese Writers" and the launch of the new book *Walking with the Stars: Manuscripts by One Hundred Writers* were held in Beijing recently.
The exhibition brings together more than 200 precious manuscripts by a hundred renowned writers, including Mo Yan, Feng Jicai, Liang Xiaosheng, Liu Cixin, Chen Yan, Su Tong, Yu Hua and Bi Shumin, practicing charity in the name of literature and raising funds for the "children of the stars" — children with autism. After being displayed at the Wenjinge Culture and Art Center at Longfu Temple, the exhibition moved on October 1 to Fangzexuan in Ditan Park, where it is currently on view and will run until October 31.
Mo Yan, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, says in the exhibition's preface that manuscripts reveal a writer's temperament and hold an innate innocence; they are important physical evidence for studying writers and understanding their works, and are all the more precious in the keyboard age. The charity initiative was jointly launched by him, Wang Zhen and the Two Bricks Public Welfare Foundation. Within a short period, hundreds of writers' manuscripts were collected. After the touring exhibition concludes, they will be publicly auctioned, with all proceeds going to the Two Bricks Public Welfare Foundation and earmarked specifically for assisting children with autism and their families.
Mo Yan describes children with autism as "children from the stars," calling their education and daily care a worldwide issue. He notes that in recent years the Two Bricks Public Welfare Foundation has raised funds through calligraphy auctions, charity lectures and other means, helping many children and families and drawing the attention of the World Health Organization.
In the preface, Mo Yan writes: "Those who practice charity will surely receive the grace of charity; those who give love will be comforted by love." He says charity is about many hands making the fire burn higher. According to statistics, by the end of March 2026, the "Walking with Mo Yan" public welfare action plan had mobilized more than 470,000 person-times to take part in charitable donations.
The more than 200 manuscripts on display cover a range of genres including fiction, poetry and essays, comprising both recent works and early drafts by the writers. These manuscripts are vivid and precious documentary archives of contemporary Chinese literature. After the touring exhibition ends, all the manuscripts will be publicly auctioned, with every yuan of the proceeds going to the Two Bricks Public Welfare Foundation and earmarked for assisting children with autism and their families. The accompanying volume *Walking with the Stars: Manuscripts by One Hundred Writers* selects the finest works from the exhibition and gathers the manuscripts of one hundred writers into a single book.
In recent years, Dongcheng District has continued to advance the building of a "City of Reading," taking the cultural resources of the old city as its foundation and expanding the boundaries of public cultural services. Dongcheng District has worked with the Chinese Modern Literature Museum to create the "Meeting Mao Dun — Mao Dun Former Residence Reception Hall" brand, and has joined with China Publishing Group to build the "Library in the Hutong" brand, bringing quality reading resources directly to the grassroots. This manuscript exhibition is an exercise by Dongcheng District in integrating resources from multiple quarters and promoting the marriage of literary reading with public welfare.
Dongcheng District will continue to delve deeper into the cultural heritage of the old city, keep building cultural platforms that deeply integrate culture, commerce, tourism, sports and exhibitions, roll out more cultural masterpieces, and write an even more vivid Dongcheng chapter for the building of the national cultural center.
